​Now in its fourth year, the Family Law Update will provide comprehensive coverage of key cases and statutory developments in Family Law between April 2019 and April 2020. 

​Dr Gillian Black and Alison Edmondson will cover core family law topics, including financial provision on divorce, cohabitation, contact and residence, and child protection measures. As well as analysis and commentary on all significant judicial developments in the 12 months to April 2020, the material will also include a review of key statutory developments, such as the Children (Scotland) Bill and the Family Justice Modernisation Strategy, and the proposed implementation of the UNCRC, together with updates on the progress of the Scottish Law Commission’s review of cohabitation. Key developments from England will also be covered, as will relevant updates regarding Brexit.

Presented by two experts in this area of law, the seminar

will include a comprehensive set of materials and the

opportunity for questions and discussion.​

Learning Outcomes and Objectives
The learning outcomes and objectives are that by the end of the seminar delegates will have (i) a sound knowledge and understanding of all major developments in Scots family law which occurred between April 2019 and April 2020; (ii) an appreciation of how these developments could and should influence their practice; and (iii) an indispensable set of source materials for easy reference following the seminar. 


Gillian Black is a Senior Lecturer in Family Law at The University of Edinburgh, and a qualified solicitor. ​Her research interests include establishing the ​parent-child relationship, the evolution of marriage, and privacy in family law. She has also published on contract, data protection, and publicity rights.

Alison Edmondson is a Director of SKO Family Law Specialists and is accredited by the Law Society of Scotland as a Specialist in Family Law and as a Family Mediator.  Her practice focuses on financial issues arising from separation and also includes family cases with novel issues such as inheritance issues, guardianship issues, complex child contact and residence, international child cases, taxation issues and the international protection of vulnerable adults.
